Snow White: A Tale Of Terror

first of all, this is not a a real movie review. Just some random thoughts and insights about the movie Snow White: A Tale of Terror.

I remember seeing the title in one of my friends' blogs last time, but i don't remember whose it was. It seemed familiar, but I'm not sure if I'd watched it before.

I was really bored this afternoon, so I tried to do something that wouldn't involve much mind work. After exhausting Google and YouTube searches of "Johnny Depp", I decided to download the movie. But that would take hours, so I just tried searching for its trailer in YouTube. Unexpectedly, I found the full-length movie. haha. So I just watched it.

Snow White: A Tale of Terror is a much darker tale of Snow White. It is far far different from the one Disney popularized where there are singing animals and a Snow White who canNOT sing. LOL. This one is really dark and the stepmother's more evil. The closest thing to the Brothers Grimm version kuno. I don't know about that. I haven't read that version. hehe.

Anyway, the film began with Mr. and Mrs. Hoffman (yes Snow White's family name was Hoffman and her name wasn't really Snow White) in a carriage in the woods. There were wolves around there and it was really creepy. blablabla. Unfortunately, they met a carriage accident that caused the death of Mrs. Hoffman. But before she died she told her husband to save the baby, so Mr. Hoffman performed a Caesarian operation on Lilian so she could "deliver" the baby. Thus, "Snow White" who was really Lilian (or Lily), named after Mrs. Hoffman, grew up without a mother.

Fast forward to the part where her stepmother arrived. They did not show her face first; They shot from behind. I really expected her to look like Lily's mom, but she didn't. LOL. blablabla. The stepmother was obsessed with her beauty and her husband's attention, and considered Lily who grew up to be as beautiful as her mother as a rival. Her hatred towards Lily increased when she had a miscarriage after seeing Lily dance with her father. And you guessed it right, (duh!) she plotted to kill Lily. The Snow White "basics" were there of course. I mean, she attempted to kill her three times--in the woods, in the mine, and by offering her a poisoned apple--yet she failed.

The difference is that, the person whom the evil stepmom ordered to kill Snow White or Lily in the woods did not take pity on her. In this one, Lily managed to get away, that's why she wasn't killed. Also, when Lily arrived at the "dwarves" house after the narrow escape, she wasn't treated well like what we used to hear when our moms read to us bedtime stories. In fact, they weren't dwarves at all except one. There were seven of them and they were miners, yes, but they weren't all dwarves. And they didn't sing hi-ho hi-ho while they worked. Plus, one of them even tried to rape Lily, but thanks to one of them (who later fell in love with Lily and vice-versa), it didn't happen. The apple. Yes, the apple was present, but it did not contain poison. Lily just got choked, that's why she couldn't breathe nor move. LOL. And they thought she was dead. Good thing that guy who saved her from being raped, managed to do a "reverse heimlich maneuver" (LOL) moments after they tried to bury her. And yeah, she was in a coffin already, but lover boy took her out to save her once more. this he did in front of Lily's fiance who was a doctor. A doctor, yes, who couldn't tell whether a person's dead or just choked. LOL.

But it was the ending that made it all different. Picture this. The stepmom bringing her sick and disabled husband in a chapel and presented it to Jesus Christ saying "I brought you company", then hanging him upside down in a crucifix. Stepmom cutting the white-as-snow face of Lily while laughing in ecstasy. Lily saving herself from her stepmom. Oh yes, Prince Charming wasn't there to rescue her. That could have never happened in a Disney film.

Snow White or Lily and her prince did not live happily ever after (or maybe she did. I wouldn't know). That's because there wasn't any prince at all, and Lily was no princess, just a daughter of a wealthy man. And her fiance died after being pushed off the window by the stepmom, by the way.

By the way, if the mirror wasn't enchanted, I would have thought that the stepmom was just a psycho. lol.

I give the movie 4 stars. haha
